Groupwise

Words cannot express how mad the general SCU community must be with the recent Groupwise outage. Outage, that's a nice word for stupidity. I really feel sorry for IT and all the crap they have and are going to get for this. It is not very hard to avoid such events, a simple RAID-1 array would have saved days of downtime and all the emails.

I can't write anymore with a somewhat level-headed tone. But I hope you join me in not trusting IT and moving to a better service *cough*gmail*cough*

It is my understanding that the GroupWise outage was caused not by SCU's IT department, but by off campus vendor, EMC.

Why did an off campus vendor have access to the GroupWise files/data, anyway?

Nice blog, by the way.

Thanks for the comment! At the time of writing this short entry, we had not yet received the email further describing the incident. Yes, it was the EMC guy, but he needed the access to back up all the GroupWise files. How ironic, that this happened when trying to improve our backup system...

While I agree that gmail is a superior webmail product than GroupWise, I find a lot of value in the GroupWise desktop client (although it won't work with my powerbook because there is no version for OS X). My work computer is a PC though and it makes it so much easier to look up people's addresses, share address lists and basically get my emails to the right people or groups of people.

I've seen better systems, but I don't think it would make sense for the entire campus to switch to gmail. :)

Hey anonymous. Ok, having a client is nice, especially for list and address management (I HATE the online version...). Obviously if the entire campus switched to gmail, that'd be a little strange, but I was talking in terms of reliability.

Also, if you're interested, there is a client available for OSX (I'm on a Powerbook right now): http://download.novell.com/Download?buildid=8GUvNrvIZdc~

Thanks for commenting!

Oh... thanks for the heads up on the Mac client. I just may look into that.

(Also...sorry for the anonymous thing.... it's not usually my style, but it seemed like the best idea for right now).

P.S. Have you seen that SCU now publishes student blogs on their website?

Haha don't worry about it. As for the blogs on the SCU site, I did see that. It sounds like a good idea, but I haven't read through any of them yet.

I just hope that the students doing the blogs give a realistic view of SCU, rather than writing what the administration wants them to write. Us, on the other hand, can write whatever we want.

Thanks for reading, keep comin back and maybe you'll see our podcast!
